So, demographer extraordinaire, Peter Francese was in town last week to give us some more news on Cape Cod, regionalization, and the demographics of its population by age.
Was it all doom and gloom? Or did the statistics show some surprising evidence of a rebound?
Here is a link to the story: Demographer says Cape's future depends on young
And here are some highlights, or lowlights of the assessment:
- Retirees already outnumber schoolchildren on the Cape by a 2-1 ratio
- Your property will be worth half in 10 years
- Five towns — Chatham, Eastham, Provincetown, Wellfleet and Truro — have more dwellings than people
- Schools in 8 towns have lost more than 1,000 students since 2000 while school costs have risen by 32%
